The starting and ending point of this trek is in Pokhara. The Poon Hill trek is an excellent option for acclimatization before attempting more challenging routes such as the Annapurna Circuit or Annapurna Base Camp treks. You’ll climb from an elevation of 1500 meters (4,921 feet) to almost 2900 meters (9,514 feet), covering over 5000 steps all the way to Ghorepani.
The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is a relatively easy route, making it perfect for families and first-time trekkers. It provides breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountains, with comfortable accommodation and delicious food. The optimal time to travel to Poon Hill is during the spring months of March and April and the fall months of October and November when it is warm and dry. Hiking during the rainy monsoon season, which lasts from May to September, is not recommended due to the increased risk of landslides and floods. The winter months of December, January, and February are the driest and coldest of the year, but it is doubtful that there will be much snow due to the relatively low elevation of the Poon Hill trail.
This trek is a circuit in the lower reaches of the Annapurna Range, with the highlight being a sunrise ascent to the peak viewpoint of Poon Hill. From there, you’ll get panoramic views of the famous Annapurna region, including Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Annapurna II, III, and IV, Dhaulagiri, Lamjung Himal, Gangapurna, Machhapuchhare, and Manaslu. The route passes through a rhododendron forest, terraced hills, rice fields, and lush foliage, providing trekkers with a strong impression of the region. The warm welcome from the indigenous Gurung and Magar villages is equally delightful. Ghorepani, located at an altitude of around 2874 meters, is a village in central Nepal within the Annapurna Conservation Area.
