The area is also known as the “Last Forbidden Kingdom” and is rich in untouched Tibetan Buddhist culture, with ancient monasteries, traditional villages, and cave dwellings high up on the cliffs, as well as the stunning architecture on display at the walled city of Lo Manthang. Organized treks only began visiting the area in 1992, and numbers are limited with an average of less than 1,000 visitors each year (capital of Mustang region).
The Upper Mustang journey offers an adventure 12-day itinerary with spectacular walking through striking semi-arid desert with colorful rock formations, deep ravines, and snow-capped peaks around you. It is located in the isolated Trans-Himalayan Region of this semi-independent Tibetan Kingdom. The beautiful surroundings merge flawlessly with the history, culture, myth, and folklore.
The name Mustang is most commonly used to describe the desert region that resembles Tibet at the northern end of the Kali Gandaki (known to its inhabitants as Lo).
One of the most fascinating areas in Nepal is Mustang, which has a long, rich, and complex history.
Despite the legends, myths, and mystery surrounding Lo’s early history, there are records of Lo-related events dating back to the eighth century. Milarepa, a Tibetan poet who lived from 1040 to 1123, is quite likely to have traveled to Lo.
The landscape in Lo itself is reminiscent of the Tibetan plateau with its limitless stretches of gray and yellow undulating hills that have been worn by the wind.
